Real antiques from the 1800s to the 1940s, such as those used in tailoring shops and general stores, are used for in-store displays and fixtures. The store was designed with the intent of creating a sense of stepping into a mysterious world, rather than just looking like an antique shop. While incorporating antiques, the design aims to evoke a timeless sense of modernity.
“In 1990, we founded our parent store, ZOOL, in Kichijoji, Tokyo. This year marks its 35th anniversary. At the first store, we mainly dealt with items from the 1940s. Over the years, ZOOL expanded into various styles and opened multiple stores. After the COVID-19 pandemic, we consolidated and now operate two stores: ZOOL and Frescade. At our peak, we had 12 stores in locations such as Kichijoji, Koenji, Harajuku, Jinnan, Daikanyama, Yokosuka, and Niigata, along with two restaurants.
Frescade is now celebrating its 12th anniversary. As I was a fashion designer myself, Frescade reflects my personal aesthetic. It’s not just a “used clothing store” with old, worn-out pieces, but a place where remarkable garments from the past are beautifully displayed as works of art. While valuing the basics, we coordinate and present them with a fresh perspective.
Since the pandemic, we’ve also focused on our online shop. We’ve hosted Instagram Lives, standalone pop-ups at venues like Shinjuku Isetan, Vintage Runways, and collaborative events with various artists. In 2023, we launched Frescade’s fashion event space, Fashionique.”
